Operax, the leading vendor of Network Service Quality control solutions, today announces it has been granted new patents in U.S., Europe and other territories to provide, assure and enable Bandwidth Management between IP/MPLS networks.

The innovation in this patent effectively allows operators with multiple network domains to ensure end-to-end Quality of Service (QoS). It also allows collaboration between different service providers and network operators to permit end-to-end QoS where a service or session spans multiple operators or networks.

This patent is commercially significant since it enables next-generation business models where premium IP-based voice and video services can achieve guaranteed QoS efficiently over multiple networks. This allows carriers to set up premium services and derive higher revenues when compared to 'best efforts' services with no explicit quality guarantees.

This patent is technically significant because it describes an overall architecture to be able to provide end-to-end QoS guarantees in multi-service networks spanning over multiple IP/MPLS network domains in an efficient way. For each session in need of guaranteed QoS, a virtual leased line from source to destination is established for the session. This is made by reserving resources in the involved Bandwidth Managers responsible for the resource-based admission control in each network domain.

Olov Schelén, CTO Operax stated: “To ensure that Operax patented technology can be readily deployed for Internet services in any IP network and in multi-vendor IMS-based NGNs, we support standards bodies such as IETF, ETSI TISPAN, ITU-T, 3GPP and TMF. While the standards describe necessary functionality and interfaces, innovations such as this show that not all standards-based products are alike; customers should consider distinctive and future business model-supporting functionality such as this when selecting a solution”.

Operax standards-based products are deployable today in non-IMS and pre-IMS network architectures and permit a future-proof migration path to full IMS network architectures. Operax continues to add new patents to its extensive portfolio of intellectual property, with more than 20 granted in the area of QoS Control and Bandwidth Management for Next-Generation all-IP networks.

About the patent
Operax patent (US: 7, 190, 698 Europe: EP 1 275 226) describes a method in a packet based communication network including network domains to establish a virtual leased line between a source and a destination in different domains in order to achieve packet transfer between the source and the destination, wherein a bandwidth broker is associated to each network domain.
